About the Artists

Elizabeth Dixon Whitaker paints landscapes in oil, takes photographs, writes, and teaches anthropology.

During and for a few years after college, Elizabeth worked in hospital audiovisual departments, where she produced scientific photographs, slides, and drawings. She also worked as a graphic artist in the advertising department of a newspaper, and as a freelancer designing logos and advertisements and creating commissioned paintings in watercolor and oil.

Since then, Elizabeth has concentrated on oil painting and photography, while also conducting research and teaching in universities in the US and Italy. She has lived part or all of every year for the past two decades in a small town in north-central Italy. For the past five years, her US home has been on the Central Coast of California.

Elizabeth likes to get out every day to look at the scenery, experience the elements, and spend time outdoors with her husband and three children. Many of her paintings and photographs show scenes from favorite places she visits while bicycling, hiking, and canoeing.

Elizabeth's daughter, Sarah Henry Whitaker, took some of the photographs displayed on this website, as indicated in the text accompanying the photos. Sarah is a college student with an interest in visual studies. She enjoys sports and outdoor activities such as bicycling and hiking. Her photographs come mainly from the Central Coast of California and the northern regions of Italy.
